About Me
Hi there! My name’s Ben Carter, and I’m a filmmaker and photographer.
Ben (he/him) began his creative journey at 10 years old, when he saw Roland Emmerich’s blockbuster 2012 for the first time. Armed with his mom’s iPad and a revolving cast of neighborhood kids, he set out to make one film every single weekend off from school. One of these weekend films, Merciful Decadence, was selected for the Tallgrass Film Festival in Wichita as part of its young filmmakers’ lineup. While still in high school, Ben also taught an after-school filmmaking workshop for middle school students, collaborating with them to create several short films.
After graduating high school, Ben attended the University of North Carolina School of the Arts to study filmmaking, earning his BFA in 2023. At UNCSA, he explored a wide range of creative outlets, screenwriting, editing, cinematography, and his favorite, directing. He also developed a passion for installation video art, drawn to its capacity for non-linear storytelling. He conceptualized Motions of Despair, an installation displayed on campus, as well as I WAS ATTACKED BY NINE PRETEEN BOYS AT A WATERPARK, a video piece screened guerrilla-style on the streets of London as part of the London Underground Film Festival.
After graduation, Ben moved to Massachusetts, falling back into his love for education and mentorship through teaching filmmaking to middle-school-aged students.
Ben now attends Florida State University, pursuing an MFA in Film Directing, continuing to hone his craft as a filmmaker and an artist.
